Winter Edition

November 2014

Greetings from the President

Greetings Quilters:
This is my last message as President of QCNYS. I want to thank all of you who have helped me over the last four years. I have enjoyed being in the position and I appreciate your trust in me. I hope I have listened well to your concerns and have been able to assist you with some of the solutions.

Thank You to the VIEW for hosting our September meeting in your wonderful facility and a special 'thank you' for allowing us to view the art show. I really was inspired to get out my paints and give it a try again. Thank you to all the helpers from Snow Country Quilt Guild and the hand quilter of Old Forge. All of you did a wonderful job and your quilt show was inspiring.

The quilt shows have been terrific this year and the set ups have been very well done. I am really proud of all of you and the hard work you have put into  your quilt shows. I know it was a lot of work, but it was worth while.  I have only missed two shows so far, how about you? Remember to turn in the last page of your passport for the drawing at the December meeting.

Keep stitching, Pamela Langdon

QCNYS Quilt Challenge 2016

Following the success of the 2014/2015 challenge the QCNYS Board of Officers is pleased to invite you to participate in a new challenge. It is our intent that this challenge will not only tour the guilds but will also be exhibited in a public venue such as the NYS Fair. We sincerely hope you will participate.

In keeping with the goals of the Travel Club, the winning quilts resulting from the challenge will be made available to member guilds for exhibition at 2016 Quilt Shows. Guilds requesting the exhibit may request the entire exhibit or a subset of the exhibit. Entries in this challenge will be the same size for ease of space planning and transportation; more importantly exhibits of like-sized, themed quilts deliver a cohesive visual impact.

  • Title/Theme: Lines and Angles of New York State - The challenge title is open to your interpretation; will your entry utilize the geometry of classic blocks or explore outside the traditions?

  • Categories: Traditional, Modern/Contemporary, Art

  • Eligibility: Entrants may come from any QCNYS membership category - Guild, Non-Profit, Individual or Business member

  • Prizes: Monetary awards totaling $1250

For more info and entry form go the QCNYS website or

2015 QCNYS Raffle Quilt

Many of you may remember that QCNYS used to have a periodic raffle quilt; these were sometimes donated by guilds or individuals and at least once a quilt was even commissioned for raffle. The Board of Officers would like to resurrect the idea of a periodic QCNYS raffle quilt, offer every level of membership the chance to participate and still not place a large burden on any one group or individual.

At the December 2014 meeting Liz Scott will unveil a collection of full size patterns for New York Beauty blocks. Each guild, business, individual and even the non-profit members are asked to choose one of the patterns and make a single block.

Playing off the limited pallet of the I Love NY ads we ask that only red, white and black fabrics be used. They may any shade/hue - consider the full range of reds from red-orange through deep maroon, deep black to charcoal, ivory to brilliant white. They may also be any fabric pattern - florals, paisleys, geometrics, solids.

The completed blocks are due at the June 2015 meeting and the Board of Officers will layout, assemble and complete a quilt by the September 2015 meeting.

Raffle tickets will be made available and we encourage you to offer them at quilt guild meetings, quilt shows; perhaps some of our business members will be willing to display the quilt. The funds raised with this quilt are specifically earmarked to support a new and exciting announcement - more about that at the December 2014 meeting.

RESULTS from the 2014 Event Survey

The QCNYS Board would like to thank the 27 guilds and 2 business members who participated in the survey. The responses were interesting as well as useful and will be used to plan future events. Below is a summary of the survey results in order of popularity:

Meet the Teachers:    With 20 responses in favor of this activity it is the clear leader in preference. Defined as a 1 day event closed to the public, open to all QCNYS member categories and permitting member Teachers the opportunity to present examples of lecture and class offerings. This would require a specific committee reporting to the QCNYS board and operating within an established budget. Fees would be established to cover expenses with minimal impact to individuals and to the QCNYS treasury.

Although Meet the Teachers is the most popular choice it is somewhat problematic as QCNYS has so few formal teacher members. It is unfair to those teacher members (a specific category of membership) to promote non-member teachers. However, it is possible that such an event, limited to the current teacher members, could take place during the afternoon of a quarterly meeting.

Quilt Conference:    The second most popular choice with 12 favorable responses. Defined as a 2 day event that is closed to the public and including vendors, lectures and classes featuring regional and national teachers, and quilt appraisals. All member categories would have an opportunity to participate; would require a Quilt Conference specific committee reporting to the QCNYS board and operating within an established budget. As a closed event this would not be considered a fund raising event; fees would be established to cover expenses with minimal impact to individuals and to the QCNYS treasury.

The QCNYS board will investigate this further, establishing the parameters for location, types of classes, lectures and budget. We would appreciate your input, particularly regarding classes.

Quilt Show and Quilt Retreat:    Each of these proposed events received 3 positive responses, far below the threshold for consideration.

Our first-ever quilt show was held on October 31 and November 1 at the beautiful Montezuma Audubon Center. We were thrilled with the turnout and were able to give a sizable donation to the Center. Our raffle quilt, which debuted at the Consortium meeting in September, was won by someone who bought a ticket at that meeting! We are very grateful for the support for our first show that was derived through the Consortium.
