The President’s Note

September 2017

Hello Quilters and Friends,

I have to say this has been one heck of a rainy Summer!  Our thoughts are with those in Texas and hoping that Hurricane Irma doesn't do any more damage to our neighbors to the South.

Thank you Keuka Quilters and Lake to Lake Quilt Guild for hosting a wonderful June meeting overlooking Keuka Lake. What a spectacular place.  We appreciate the time and energy you put into making us comfortable for our Summer 2017 meeting.

Have you signed up for the September meeting yet?  Piecemakers of Moravia is hosting us on September 20th.  We will have a short business meeting and break into three discussion groups.  Discussion groups are:  Quilt Shows from a Vendor's Prospective - Barb Smith, Limestone Threads; Quilt Judging and Appraisals - Val Schultz, Mt. View Quilting; National Quilt Day - Ann Hawkins.  And you will look forward to hearing about Quilting Connections 2018 and are great plans for next September!  If you haven't registered yet, do it NOW!!

We're looking for a few volunteers to join the Board in a number of different "jobs."  Feel free to bring someone from your guild that you think could help us out!  We'd love to meet her.

May your bobbin always be full!

Ann Hawkins

Exhibit Title and Theme: CONVERGE
QCNYS members converge from across the State. The 2017 – 2018 Quilt Challenge will encourage QCNYS Quilters to use applique, piecing, wholecloth, and mixed techniques to interpret the theme.  Converge is a verb: to meet in a point or line, incline toward each other as lines that are not parallel; to tend to a common result or conclusion; (mathematical) to have values eventually close to some number, to have a finite limit; to have a finite value.

The Challenge : Participants are invited to consider the Theme and its definition and make a quilt of a specific size (see below). Will your entry consider converging lines? Or converging ideas? Or will it explain the mathematic concepts?  This challenge is open to all QCNYS members. A maximum of 12 entries will be chosen to travel throughout the 2018 Quilt Show season.

Cost: As in past years there is no entry fee. Participants who ship their entries are required to provide return shipping costs.
Prizes: Prizes awarded will be based on principles of design, interpretation of the theme and basic construction skills.
We hope to see participation representing many different interests and techniques and have kept the criteria to a minimum:

  • Entries must be made in response to the theme and completed after January 2017.
  • All entries must be 36” x 36”
  • Each quilt must have a 4” sleeve firmly attached
  • All entries must have an identifying label firmly attached.

Entry Deadline: January 5, 2018 (Entry form)  Quilt Due Date: March 15, 2018
More information and Entry Form available at

Carol SoderlundTrue Colors: Developing your personal palette
Friday October 27th - Sunday October 29th  This class will help you choose your personal palette of pure reds, yellow, and blues, from which all hues can be mixed. Emphasis is placed on mixing colors by eye rather than by formula, developing skill in intuitive color mixing, based primarily on training the eye and understanding of the relationship between colors. Students will dye up from 8 to 10 yards of cotton using low water immersion techniques, resulting in both solid-colored and multi-colored cloth.  This class is appropriate for all levels.   Non- Members: $380 / Members: $370

Amanda McCavour  Experimental Surfaces: Machine Stitching and Unexpected Materials
Friday October 27th - Sunday October 29th  During this class we will explore stitching as a drawing technique. Using our sewing to create lines and textures, we will focus on constructing mixed media surfaces by combining machine embroidery and water soluble stabilizer in a variety of ways. We will experiment with plastics, papers, and yarns to create a variety of samples exploring different texture and color combinations where stitch holds the work together.  Non- Members: $380 / Members: $370

Sharif Bey  Ceramics: Pottery, Object, and Identity
Saturday November 18- Sunday November 19th  During this workshop participants will use clay and mixed media to create functional and sculptural objects that challenge and expand notions of object, ritual, function and adornment. We will explore pinch, coil, and thrown and altered forms to construct objects of cultural, historical, political and personal meaning. Participants may additionally develop unique surfaces by layering non-ceramic materials such as nail and shoe polishes, paste wax, permanent markers and acrylic and spray paint in addition to glazes, oxides, slips and terrasigilattas.  Non-members: $265 / Members $255

Hello Everyone!   Just got back from a fun evening with the Snow Country guild in Remsen New York.  The Quilt Lady told the story of Lily and her family's situation after the Civil War. A laugh filled, good time was had by everyone!

But that is not why I am writing you.  I am proud to announce the Quilt Lady is adding three new stories to her collection.  Coming in late October she will have a trunk show and story about The Underground Railroad Quilting controversy.  And then by the end of the year she will add a trunk show and story about Women's Issues - Suffragettes Abolitionist and Temperance.   Early next year the third will be added....I was a Mail Order Bride.  Keep an eye on the website for further updates!
