#1 Finding Joy
Artist's Statement:
"There is a crack, a crack in everything/that's how the light gets in" --Leonard Cohen
#3 Bits of Joy
Artist's Statement:
This quilt records a few joyful moments in 2023: The first row depicts the zinnia garden, a colorful batik found on a
shop hop and Lake Superior from Duluth. The second row shows a small waterfall on the creek at Stone Arch Bridge,
ribbons from a party in my honor and cardinal in a bush outside our window. The third row is my herb garden in May,
a white-throated sparrow and my old garden roses.
#5 Look Mommy, I'm Riding my Bike!
Artist's Statement:
There is no greater "Joy" than a granddaughter. This photo was taken about 5 years ago when she was learning to
ride her first bike. She was so excited and her mother snapped this picture at exactly the right time for joy. The
greater challenge for me was in doing a portrait as I am not usually a portrait quilter. I see the same expression in this
quilt as I did in the original picture.
#7 Joy
Artist's Statement:
There are many things and all things that bring me joy. I used word sculpt in my embroidery software to list some of
the many things that bring me joy.
I used scraps gifted from a friend and bags I make for the homeless and
dimensional stitches on my Epic2
#2 Roses in Bloom
Artist's Statement:
Life is chaos. I find joy in the simplest moments of my ordinary life;
A hug from my grandson;
A quiet dinner with family;
Sharing a glass of wine with good friends;
Finding the roses blooming in the garden, smelling their sweet, beautiful fragrance.
These intangible moments bring me the most joy, they renew my spirit and help me dispel the chaos
#4 JOY! Juniper Spreading Sunshine
Artist's Statement:
Done blowing bubbles on her second birthday, Juniper
joyfully began spreading sunshine to each of her party guests!
Translating life into expressive fabric art
engages the viewer, whether quilter or not.
#6 Stitching Joy
Artist's Statement:
Quilted on my Bernina Q16 sit down long arm. I’ve taken many classes on machine quilting starting with Carol Taylor
many years ago on my little Elna machine. I’ve recently taken a class by Bethanne Nemesh and have learned so
much from so many in between including locally Mandy Applebee. For anyone who wants to learn there are so many
resources out there. I love every aspect of quilting from start to finish. Enjoy it
Voting has ended. Award winners will be announced at the March QCNYS Membership Meeting. Watch this space for announcement of winners following the meeting.
Winning quilts travel to quilt shows throughout the State of New York for a period of approximately two years
and are exhibited at the Best of New York Quilt Show.
The QCNYS Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who shared their interpretations of the 2023 JOY! challenge and the many persons who voted to determine the outcome.
