QCNYS Quilt Challenge 2023
Call for Entry
THEME: JOY!
What is joyful to you? A time? A place? A person? A pet? Show us!
While the subject matter is rather wide open, the Challenge lies within the following constraints:
REQUIREMENTS
- You, your guild or your business must be a member of QCNYS.
- Size of quilt: 20” x 20”. Why? It’s a challenge (no using previously created quilts). It’s a more manageable size for YOU to quilt (not a professional quilter). If we are able to exhibit them at a Best Of New York Quilt Show in the future, we could use existing frames.
- No using kits, others’ patterns, others’ art, or others’ photos. What??!!?! Stretch yourself to create your OWN kit, using your OWN pattern, your OWN art, or your OWN photo. Feel free to work traditional blocks into your quilt. Perhaps as a border? (For example, did you attend the December Quarterly Meeting? One of the Scholarship recipients showed a One-Block-Wonder which was integrated into a panel. Hexies are certainly “traditional,” but what if you integrated it into your own painting, your own printed photograph or wonderfully dyed fabric you created? Or if you are REALLY brave, look up Jack Edson on Facebook. His portraits are often created from traditional blocks. Even if you don’t attempt it, you’ll enjoy seeing his work!)
- Entries must consist of 3 layers (except yo-yos) joined with stitching through all layers with bound or faced edges.
- Feel free to embellish with drawing, painting, embroidery, couching, beading (if the beads are well-secured), and/or thread painting. Embellishments must stay within the 20” size and not be too thick or extend too far beyond the surface of the quilt in order to withstand possible exhibiting, packing & shipping.
- Quilts must have a 4” hanging sleeve with sufficient ease to accept 1” rod without distortion.
- Items must be labeled with the participant’s name, title of the quilt, and a way to contact you.
- Entries will be registered via a QCNYS virtual form and must include a well-focused photograph of the entry AND a detail of the entry (jpg format, no greater than 5MB, dimensions to be at least 1200 pixels on longest side, all edges must show in photo, and file name: YOUR LAST NAME _YOUR ENTRY TITLE.
- Artist’s Statement in 75 words or less.
PLEASE do not share your quilt image. Thank you! - Entries will be posted on QCNYS.org and in the quarterly newsletter. They must be available to be exhibited at the next Best of New York Quilt Show.
